The Giver

During my last movie outing with my co-workers I saw the movie poster for Lois Lowry's book The Giver and I immediately got excited. I had remembered reading it while I was in middle school for one of my classes and I remembered that I loved the book. What I realized though after I saw the movie poster was that even though I read it in middle school I couldn't fully remember what it was about. So like any book lover would do I read the book before it came out in theaters, just to refresh my memory as to what the book was about. If you are like me let me quickly go into what it is about.

In a community where everything is under control, everything is the same and all the choices are made by a council of elders a twelve year old Jonas is excited to finally receive his roll in the community. He is selected for the highly honorable position of Receiver of Memory, a position only given out once ever so often. The memories of the whole community is given to Jonas by The Giver. Over time the truth comes out and nothing is the same for Jonas.

The Giver is a great book to teach everyone about memories and emotion and how those are things we take for granted in life. For without emotion we aren't really feeling and without memories we don't truly know what life is all about.

"There were no quick comfort for emotions like those. They were deeper and they did not need to be told. They were felt"
"Memories need to be shared"
"Memories are forever"

After I finished reading the book I decided to take a look at the movie trailer. Now I know that movies are never exactly the same as their literary counterparts and are changed for the screen to pull in more viewers but I always hope that they keep some important features in the movie from the book. Like I said things are changed for the screen to pull in viewers so I will give the movie the benefit of the doubt and go see it when it comes out in theaters. The only thing that I wish they kept the same is the way the main character looked, Lois Lowry took the time to describe certain features of her characters to her readers so I feel that details like that are things that Hollywood shouldn't change and should be true to. But anyway I am excited to see the movie now that I have finished re-reading the book.

Have you read The Giver? How did you like it? Are you excited to see the movie?
